This is an individual competition.
1. Speed: 750 meters per minute. The time allowed is 6.4 secs for an 80m course.
2. Number of Rounds: Two
3. Number of Runs: Three per round
The first round will have 2 runs on 6cm pegs; the 3rd run on 4cm pegs.
In the second round, the first run will be on 6cm peg; the 2nd & 3rd runs will be on 4cm pegs.
4. Placing: Highest scorer in both rounds will be placed first and the next best score will be placed next, and so on.
5. Tie: To avoid undue stress on tent pegging horses, there should be only one additional run on a 2.5cm peg. Then the classification will be according to the time. If we still have a tie, then the classification will be according to the time of the last run, and if a tie persists, then the time of the run prior to that will be used to determine the winner/positions.
6. Length of Course: 80m (start to the finish line)
7. Carry Distance: 10 meters for Card Board pegs and 15 meters for wooden pegs.
8. First Peg: 70 meters from the start line
This is team Competition starting with four riders.
1. Speed: 680 meters per minute. The time allowed is 7.0 sec for an 80m course.
2. Number of Rounds: Two
3. The number of Runs: First round will have 2 runs on 6cm pegs; the 3rd run on 4cm peg. The second round will have first run on 6cm peg; the 2nd & 3rd runs on 4cm pegs.
4. Points secured by all four riders will count.
5. Length of Course: 80m (start to the finish line)
6. Carry Distance: 10 meters for Card Board Peg and 15 meters for wooden pegs.
7. First Peg: 70 meters from the start line
This is an individual competition and rules laid down for lance (individual) will apply with the same speed. Thus, time allowed over an 80m course will be 6.4 seconds. Thereafter, time penalties apply.
This is team competition consisting of 4 riders and rules laid down for lance (team) will apply and the speed shall be 750 meters per minute. The time allowed is 6.4 secs for an 80m course.
This is a paired competition consisting of 2 riders riding abreast.
1. Speed: 680 meters per minute. Time allowed is 7 secs for an 80m course.
2. Number of Rounds: One round of 2 runs. The first run will be on 6cm pegs; the second run shall be on 4cm pegs.
3. Placing: The team with maximum points will be placed, winner. The next best score second, and so on.
4. Length of Course: 80m (start to finish line)
The competition is run over two runs. In the first run, all competitors carry lances; in the second run, all competitors will carry swords. The total team score of both runs minus time penalties, if any would decide the team positions. Each competitor will attempt the peg as per the serial number in the orders of the start of the team. Carry of a wrong peg will not qualify the competitor for any score.
1. Speed: 680 meters per minute
2. Time Allowed: While computing time allowed for Indian File, allowance must be catered for the distance between pegs (i.e., 1 meter between each peg) and distance required to be maintained between 2 horses (i.e., 11 meters). Thus, the time allowed for Card Board pegs is 10 secs for an 80m course.
3. Competitor positions: If a competitor’s peg is knocked out of the ground by a previous rider, and the correct rider manages to score a strike on the peg, he/she will receive 4 points as for a draw and 6 points if he/she carried fully.
4. When a competitor draws his/her peg and it falls against the peg of the following competitor and this rider touches or carries both pegs, he/she will receive points on his/her peg alone.
5. Number 1 peg will be opposite the peg marked.
6. Number 1 rider takes the first peg; Number 2 rider takes the second peg, and so on.
7. When a rider has passed his peg, it becomes a “dead peg.” If the following rider strikes it, there will be no penalty and no points are scored for that peg.
This is an Individual competition.
1. Speed: 680 meters per minute (time allowed is 7 secs)
2. Number of Rounds: Two rounds, 1 on 6cm peg; 2 on 4cm peg
3. Placing: Highest scorer of both rounds will be placed first and the next best score will be placed second, and so on.

5. Carry Distance: 15 meters for Wooden Pegs; 10 meters for Cardboard Pegs
6. First ring: 35 meters from the start line
7. First peg: 70 meters from the start line
8. Size of ring: 60mm internal diameter
1. The course set up as for Rings and Peg. Instead of Rings, Lemons and Peg-in-a-line will be positioned.
2. Speed: 680 meters per minute (time allowed is 7 secs)
3. Height of Lemon suspended. 2.2m to the top of a lemon
4. Slice One: With the sword resting horizontally behind the shoulders, hand in line with a shoulder at neck height, elbow below the hand, and cut horizontally from rear to front.
5. Slice Two: With a sword at the left shoulder, cut horizontally from front to rear, at neck height with an elbow as high as hand.
Note: A downward cut or “Push” at lemon will not be allowed and no points shall be awarded for the same.
All riders of 16yrs of age and above can participate in NEC Tent Pegging Championships.
A rider can participate in individual events with more than one horse however he has to nominate one horse for which he will get the rider point. He may be awarded a medal for his second horse.
1. Horses participating in National Tent-Pegging Championships cannot participate in any other discipline in that show.
2. Horses below 5yrs of age cannot participate in National Tent-pegging Championships.
3. The events should be so planned that in a day horses are not required to do more than 10 runs, excluding additional runs (in case of a tie).
4. The minimum height of a horse shall be 14.2 hands unshod. An allowance of 10mm (3/8inch) will be made for shoes. Horses are to be measured by Veterinary Commission of the Organizing Committee prior to the commencement of the competition on the request of the Judge or his deputy or complaint by a team captain.
The lance shall not be shorter than 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) and shall not exceed 2.75 meters (9 feet) with a smooth metal point without serrated or sharp edges. Grips are permitted. Lances can be of any material.
The sword shall not be shorter than 81cm (2 feet 8 inches) & shall not exceed 90cm (2 feet 11.5 inches) in blade length, with an overall length, not exceeding 110cm. Blades on hilt, slings or barbs not allowed.
The dimensions of wooden pegs are 30cm long, 2.5cm thick but the width will vary from 6cm/4cm/3cm/2.5cm, depending on the stage of the competition. The Jury will make every effort to select pegs of uniform weight and size as much as possible from the pegs provided by the Organizing Committee. However, this provision cannot form a point for objection by the teams/competitors.
In order to prevent the pegs from splitting and breaking up, they should be bound with wire 2cm from the top end and again 13cm from the bottom point. The wooden pegs will be soaked in water before the competition to prevent them from splitting. The pegs should preferably be made of the wood of a date palm or any other fibrous material and should as far as possible equal in weight and should not break up when pierced by the lance/sword.
Card Board Pegs used should be made of two (2) layers of corrugated cardboard glued together with a total thickness of 2.5cm with the corrugation running vertically. Sizes will be as specified for wooden pegs.
Note: Any other synthetic peg of the same dimensions can be used provided above principles hold good.
6 Points:
For wooden pegs carried all the way or fall forward/sideways beyond 15 meters. For cardboard pegs carried all the way or fall forward/sideways beyond 10m measured from the point at which the peg was placed. In single file, the same principle holds good. Peg struck with the point of lance or sword, but breaks and part of it still in the ground, even if no part of it still attached to the weapon.
4 Points:
Peg removed from the ground, but not carried full distance as stipulated above.
2 Points:
Peg struck on the face, but not removed from its position in the ground. Note: Peg must be struck on the face of the peg by the point of the weapon and must leave a mark on the peg (marks on the side of the pegs are not countable). Doubtful pegs must be handed over to the jury.
Rings carried on the lance Up to 6 points each: Carry Peg 6pts, Draw of peg 4pts, Strike of peg 2pts.
Horizontal slice or cut on lemon – Must be clear and distinct and caused due to use of the sword.
Up to 6 points each: Carry Peg 6pts, Draw of peg 4pts, Strike of peg 2pts.
1. Saddlery in good condition and of any type may be used. The stirrups or stirrup leather may not be attached to any other part of the horse or saddlery.
2. Running reins and dropped nosebands are permitted. Martingales are optional.
3. Horses should wear appropriate leg wraps or sports boots.
Safety helmets or hard top hat must be worn in all Tent Pegging Competitions.
Appropriate equestrian attire; team entries must adhere to each team’s standard uniform. T-Shirts are allowed for civilian/individual competitors only.
Changes to this, if any, can be made with the permission of the President of the Ground Jury in case of exceptional circumstances.

The USTPA may, from time to time, lay down a minimum standard for awarding of medals in the National Championships.
Note: Winner of the Tent Pegging Lance (Individual) will be declared as the National Champion.
The pegs are driven into the ground at an angle of 60 degrees from horizontal, with exactly 17cm of the peg showing above the ground level. The face of the peg must be painted white or sprinkled with pure white chalk/lime.
Electronic Timers are mandatory for the conduct of USTPA events.
